Why We Love and Hate Women’s History Month

It doesn’t seem like a stretch to say a lot of women have a conflicted, love-hate relationship with Women’s History Month (WHM).

We love that the world takes a time-out to spotlight women’s achievements and the remarkable talents, insights, and creativity females bring to the table. But we despair that society still feels it necessary and even laudable to offer “special” (read token) recognition to more than half of the world’s population.

And while we are profoundly disappointed that during all 12 months of the year, we still can’t claim equal rights and protections under the law, we love the imagination so many organizations and individuals devote to celebrating females during Women’s History Month.

A favorite for 2022 is the New York Public Library (NYPL). You can take an online tour of its “Hall of Femme,” honoring remarkable women who changed not only the NYPL but also the field of librarianship forever. And while you’re at it, you can “check out” the library’s 2022 WHM reading list—31 recent books by and about women.

As a 100 percent woman-owned business, Street Level Studio sees no conflict, however, in taking this opportunity to celebrate and say thanks to the many women who support and partner with us—from our own talented team members to the clients we collaborate with and the fellow businesswomen in our community who cheer us on.

And, as a multichannel marketing agency that communicates with millions of women (and men) through our work, we are never conflicted about our responsibility to be respectful, authentic, and empathic every day of the year. The fact that Women’s History Month affords us a “special” opportunity to express that is just one more reason we love it. Let’s hear it for women!
