The online event, TAD Talk: Technology And Design, will take place on Tuesday, September 22, at 10 a.m. CDT.

From the dotCOMM Awards, the Highwood agency won a Platinum Award for the “ProStream Interactive Experience” it created on behalf of its client Canon Solutions America. August 24, 2020, Highwood, IL – In recognition of its outstanding achievements in the concept, writing, and design of traditional and emerging media, Street Level Studio (SLS) received three top 2020 Hermes Creative Awards in an international competition featuring thousands of marketing, communication, advertising, public relations, digital media production, and freelance professionals. This is the second year in a row SLS, a full-service creative agency located in Highwood, has been recognized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.
Street Level Studio won a Platinum Award for its custom wall mural featured at the 2020 Lake Forest Showhouse. SLS surface designers used a digital hand-painting technique to create an updated version of classic chinoiserie featuring a magpie in flight amid wispy clouds. The mural is part of the agency’s Beyond the Surface™ personalized wallcoverings service, which also won a Gold Award for a graphic branded wallcovering in the SLS lobby.
In the design category, SLS received a Gold Award for the Canon Smart Production Platform logos created for client Canon Solutions America. A blend of text and iconography, the logos conveyed the unique characteristics of three individual software solutions while visually relating to the platform as a whole. Additionally, SLS was awarded Honorable Mentions for the Girls Night Out event logo created for the Highwood Chamber of Commerce and the Cool Jobs video—produced by Brian Fuller, the agency’s digital creative director—as an inspirational message for at-risk students. The video was created pro bono for Fresh Artists, a nonprofit that promotes access to the transformative process of art making for children, and was presented at the career expo of the same name.
Nearly 6,500 entries were submitted by organizations from across the globe to the 2020 Hermes Creative Awards competition. Winners were selected in 200 categories grouped under advertising, publications, marketing/branding, public relations/communications, electronic media, integrated marketing, and pro bono work. Award recipients represent companies and individuals whose creative talents and work serve as benchmarks for excellence.
Breakfast room showcases marketing and design agency’s Beyond the Surface™ bespoke wallcoverings
July 13, 2020, Highwood, IL – Beyond the Surface™ bespoke wallcoverings, a new design service from Chicago-area marketing and design agency Street Level Studio, is being showcased at the 2020 Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens. The agency’s surface designers were commissioned to create a custom, chinoiserie-inspired wall mural for the breakfast room in the 1906 Pullman estate, selected as the location for this year’s fundraiser benefitting the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, July 11 through August 9.
The commission came from the creative team responsible for remodeling the breakfast room and adjoining kitchen—The ABL Group, Dovetails Cabinetry, and DP Home Design, all based in Highwood. Their vision, according to designer Doreen Avila, was “to create a feature wall that would echo the aesthetics of the elaborate hand-painted wallpapers and scenic murals throughout the historic home but in a lighter, more approachable, and unexpected way.”
The finished mural includes five unique panels reminiscent of traditional Asian screens and embroidery. The panels seamlessly meld into an airy naturalistic scene of creamy clouds and colorful soaring magpies, the work of Street Level Studio designer Jennie Dembowski. “The birds were inspired by the details of classic Audubon illustrations and created using a kind of electronic hand painting technique,” says Dembowski. “It involved building hundreds of layers and carefully recreating thousands of strokes to reflect the iridescent blues and greens of magpie feathers in flight.”
In the spirit of raising funds for a worthy cause, Street Level Studio not only completed the wallcoverings project pro bono, but the agency also was able to “enlist support from several business partners to produce the finished mural panels,” says Tanya Fretheim, the agency’s owner and president. “Canon Solutions America generously donated the media—STYLine® New York, a luxury matte paper imported from Germany that was perfect for reproducing the texture and softness of classic chinoiserie—while RPM Digital Imaging printed the panels using the state-of-the-art Canon Colorado large format printer to assure just the right color intensity, quality, and panel-to-panel consistency.”
The biannual Lake Forest Showhouse is one of the oldest and most successful in the country, nationally recognized for transforming some of the North Shore’s most magnificent estates. This year, 39 talented professionals have turned the 23-room, 11,000-square-foot Pullman House and surrounding three acres of gardens into a stunningly modern revival of classic design. The 2020 Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens is open daily, with a restricted number of tickets sold in advance and tour groups divided into morning and afternoon sessions. May 13, 2020, Highwood, IL – Brian Fuller, digital creative director of Street Level Studio (SLS), has been tapped to participate in a unique effort encouraging kids at risk of dropping out to stay in school and pursue careers in the arts.
Cool Jobs, run by Philadelphia-based nonprofit Fresh Artists, is a free three-day expo for sixth and seventh grade students who have an interest in the arts but may not know of the career opportunities in the industry. The event seeks to inspire by introducing them to working artists, chefs, designers, photographers, and other creatives who talk informally about their jobs and how they got them.
“There are so many opportunities for kids to use their creativity in school and have that translate into a successful career,” Fuller says. “Cool Jobs is such a unique way for kids to realize their future, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Fuller was invited to speak at the expo about his career trajectory and his creative work at Street Level Studio, a Chicago-area marketing and design agency. However, due to coronavirus restrictions, Cool Jobs quickly pivoted from a live event to a digital program, launching a video library of successful creatives sharing how they prepared for their careers.
Fuller was the first presenter to pivot, as well, and put his expertise to work. Using motion graphics, live footage, shots of the SLS space and team, and energetic music, he created a fast-paced video to spark the kids’ interest in school and a creative career. The video strategically intertwines questions kids might have about an artistic career while Fuller shares his story and excitement about his job.

November 14, 2019, Highwood, IL – Lake County Barnwood (LCB), a family-owned business in Lake Villa that gives old Midwest barns a new life, was recently chosen by marketing agency Street Level Studio (SLS) to create several one-of-a-kind furniture pieces and wall installations for its custom-built new workspace in Highwood.
“We’d worked with Lake County Barnwood as a client, updating their website. So, it was only natural to turn to them when we were looking to add texture and visual interest to our new location,” says Tanya Fretheim, SLS owner and president. “Placing their handcrafted touches throughout the industrial space helped us create an environment that really reflects our eclectic culture and reputation for creativity.”
One of the things that attracted Fretheim to LCB was the family’s distinct approach to preserving not just construction materials from torn-down barns but also each structure’s history and character. As an integral part of the process, LCB records the story of each structure and shares it with customers so they know where their wood is coming from and why it deserves a second life.
Co-owner Paul Quinn and the Lake County Barnwood team carefully take apart barns in disrepair that are no longer structurally sound. Quinn’s daughter Shannon and her husband Frank Kersey then sell the reclaimed wood in their shop or use it to handcraft cabinets, tables, shelving, seasonal décor, and other custom pieces designed to showcase each board’s age, patina, and past life.
For the new Street Level Studio offices at 214 Green Bay Road, LCB created several custom pieces. These include a rustic planter display wall of mixed barn boards and shiplap harvested from Illinois farms in Burlington and Monroe County and an old yellow cottage in Wadsworth. Weathered painted planks from a Hainesville barn became a chevron patterned kitchen bar front, while salvage from a farm in Cobb, Wisconsin farm was transformed into a one-of-a-kind cabinet for the conference room.
“Lake County Barnwood’s contributions to our new office space provide a feeling of warmth and so does supporting a local small business,” says Fretheim. “I like to think of it as another way to connect with the Midwest and its history.”

September 12, 2019, Highwood, IL – Tanya Fretheim, president and owner of Street Level Studio, was honored today as one of 15 winners in the 2019 North Shore Women in Business Awards. Fretheim won in the highly contested Woman-Owned Business category, which recognizes outstanding leadership and business savvy.

North Shore marketing agency’s intricate design scheme highlights multiple ways to “Experience Highwood”
July 1, 2019, Highwood, IL – At 4 a.m. on July 1, while the rest of the North Shore slept, Highwood work crews began climbing on ladders to install the city’s bold new street light banners. Created by local marketing agency Street Level Studio (SLS), the new banners are designed and arranged to draw attention to the wide variety of ways to “Experience Highwood” and all it has to offer.
Installation of the 171 new light pole banners was timed to coincide with Highwood’s Fourth of July celebration. After spending several weeks refining concepts with the Highwood Chamber of Commerce and Highwood City Council Appearance Review Committee, Street Level Studio’s owner Tanya Fretheim presented the final design plan at the Council meeting on June 4 and received unanimous approval.
“Everyone on the Council was thrilled to have a design professional like Street Level Studio working with us on the banner project,” says Scott Coren, Highwood City Manager. “We began with an extensive public input process, and Street Level was able to accommodate the variety of creative ideas and bring them to life in their banner concept. Plus, having their professional expertise right from the start gave us confidence we were not only following design best practices but also well positioned to handle the thematic sequencing, continuity, and logistics needed to realize the vision and bring a more dynamic look to our downtown.”
Once the design was approved, SLS faced the challenge of executing and managing the intricate project in a very compressed timeframe.
“Street Level Studio didn’t just design the new banners,” Fretheim says. “We also developed a detailed production and installation plan that, of necessity, rivaled the precision of a military maneuver. Rather than the typical one-and-done approach used by most municipalities, we made sure identical banners do not repeat on all 103 light poles lining Highwood’s downtown. Instead, our design approach really mixes it up to create more buzz and rally community spirit.”
Using a complex coded mapping system and working directly with the printer, Graphic Arts Services, SLS produced alternating red and orange vinyl banners representing 10 unique categories that reflect the city’s character, services, businesses, and celebrations. Then senior designer Chris Gach and creative director Grogg paired banners in each category with a series of striking black-and-white photographs provided by Street Level Studio, the Highwood Chamber of Commerce, Celebrate Highwood, the Highwood Historical Society, and Illinois Railway Museum.
“We couldn’t be happier with the results,” says Carolyn Cerf, executive director of the Highwood Chamber of Commerce. “Street Level Studio went above and beyond and turned the light pole banner project into something extraordinary. Our goal was to showcase all the things that make Highwood unique and special. And, after much behind-the-scenes logistics and creative problem-solving, they absolutely captured Highwood in a way that feels effortless as well as exciting.”

February 7, 2019, Highwood, IL – During its annual meeting on February 1, the Highwood Chamber of Commerce installed Tanya Fretheim, owner and managing director of Street Level Studio, as a member of its 2019 Board of Directors. As part of her duties, Fretheim will be chairing the Chamber’s Marketing Committee, which is responsible for promoting the organization’s events, services, and programs in support of the local business community.

Brian Fuller joins the SLS team from CDW, a leading technology solutions provider, where he served in several creative, multimedia capacities at both a design and managerial level. January 15, 2015, Highwood, IL – Chicago-area marketing and design agency Street Level Studio (SLS) has been acquired by Tanya Fretheim. She purchased the business from cofounders Joe and Wendy Davis, who are leaving SLS after nearly 30 years. Fretheim’s purchase makes the agency a 100 percent woman-owned business.
“Tanya has been part of the SLS team for 17 years, starting as a graphic designer before getting promoted to project manager and then account services director,” Joe Davis says. “During this time, she came to understand all aspects of the business from design and administrative to leadership and client relations.
